Duquesne University School of Law

New Student Technology Guide

Information Technology Resources for Admitted/ Incoming Students

Though owning a laptop is not mandatory, it is highly advised that you purchase a new laptop for your time at law school. 99% of our current students have a laptop computer with a 50/50 split between Windows-based and Mac-based laptops. We recommend using whatever operating system you are most comfortable with. Note that there is a $1,000 computer allowance in the total cost of attendance so that a new laptop could be obtained through your financial aid package.

Recommended for new laptop purchases:

  • PC/Windows - Name brand (Dell, Samsung, Sony)- Windows 7 or 8.1, 250GB SSD (solid state hard drive), at least 4 GB RAM (memory)
  • Apple/Mac - At least a 13 inch size screen (MacBook Pro or MacAir) with at least 128 SSD, at least 4 GB RAM. AppleCare 3-year warranty.
  • Note: CD/DVD Drives are generally no longer needed. Windows XP, Vista are not supported, nor is Mac OS 10.5 or earlier

If you own a laptop, you will be able to complete exams using our ExamSoft software (the same software used for the PA Bar Exam).

Over 40 public computers are available throughout the Law Library for your use.

The Law Library is home to 2 printer centers (Rooms 218B and 117), connected to the public computers. Students can also install the Pharos software to print from their personal laptops. Students can print up to 3,000 pages per academic year at no cost and must authenticate with their MultiPass username/password. Additionally pages can be conditionally approved by emailing lawit@duq.edu.

Document, photo scanners, image editing and OCR software can also be found in the print centers

Each classroom seat is equipped with an electrical outlet, as well as all study tables and carrels in the Law Library so you will be able to power/charge your laptop and/or other mobile devices.
