Application Process

Application Requirements for J.D. Candidates

Except for students in approved 3/3 early admissions programs, all candidates for admission must be graduates of an accredited college or university prior to registration at the School of Law.

Applicants from a variety of academic backgrounds are offered admission each year. No specific undergraduate academic curriculum is required, but it is highly recommended that the course of study emphasizes skill in critical thinking and logical analysis, and that students strive to develop strong writing skills. The Law School does not accept students who have been disqualified from another law school for academic reasons.

Before any applicant can be considered, all of the following items must be submitted:

There is NO application fee to apply to Duquesne Law for the 2014-2015 application cycle. Applicants should apply through lsac.org between September 1 and March 1.

1. Application Form: Please apply via the Law School Admission Council (LSAC)

2. Law School Admission Test (LSAT):

All applicants are required to take the LSAT. The LSAT is offered by the Law School Admission Council four times a year in February, June, October, and December. Visit www.lsac.org for more information regarding the LSAT. Duquesne Law sees all LSAT scores on the CAS report, but uses the highest LSAT score for reporting purposes.

When to take the LSAT? 

Because decisions are made on a rolling basis, it is in your best interest to take the LSAT on or before the December administration. February test scores may be submitted, however, you may not receive a decision until later in the application cycle. Scores from tests taken more than four years before the application cycle will not be considered for admission.

3. Candidate Assembly Service (CAS): All applicants are required to subscribe to the Law School Admission Council CAS. Official transcripts from each college or university attended must be sent directly to CAS. Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university before matriculating at the Law School. Please note that it is important to sign up for CAS at least six weeks before the Law School application deadline.

4. Letter of Recommendation: One letter of recommendation is required for each applicant. Additional letters (up to 3) may be submitted for consideration. A recommendation should be submitted by a professor familiar with the applicant's academic work. Applicants who have been out of school for some time may submit a letter from an employer. 

Applicants should submit their letters of recommendation through the CAS letter of recommendation service.

5. Personal Statement: A one- to two-page typed essay must be submitted. Applicants often address their backgrounds, why they want to practice law, and why they would like to attend Duquesne Law. There is no required topic, but applicants should view the personal statement as an opportunity to provide the Admissions Committee with more information about themselves beyond their transcripts and LSAT scores.

6. Resume: Applicants must submit a current resume or CV.

Character and Fitness Information

The School of Law application requests information regarding your character and fitness. Complete and accurate information is essential. Failure to furnish all supporting credentials or the furnishing of incorrect information may invalidate admission and registration. Any false or misleading statement, incomplete or inaccurate information, omission of required information or failure to update changes in information in this application may cause you to be denied admission; or, if admitted, to be dismissed from the School of Law, or cause your degree to be revoked, and may jeopardize licensure with Boards of Bar Examiners. 

Graduates of Duquesne University School of Law are eligible to take bar examinations in all jurisdictions of the United States. Applicants/admitted students who intend to practice law should also be aware that admission to the bar in all states involves character, fitness, and other qualifications. In planning their courses of study, students are advised to consult with bar examiners in the state in which they wish to practice to determine whether specific curricular criteria or registration requirements exist for admission to the bar in that jurisdiction. Applicants are encouraged to determine what those requirements are in the state(s) in which they intend to practice by consulting the website of the National Conference of Bar Examiners.

Continuing Obligation to Notify 

Applicants/admitted students have a continuing obligation to notify the Law School immediately if any of the following events occur: (1) They are apprehended, cited, arrested, taken into custody for, charged with, indicted or tried for, or plead guilty or no contest (nolo contendere) to, the commission of any crime, except for summary traffic violations unrelated to the use of intoxicants; (2) They are found guilty of an honor code violation at any institution of higher learning; (3) They are subject to disciplinary action by any educational institution, governmental or administrative agency (including any branch of the Armed Forces); or (4) They are notified of any misconduct or irregularity by the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC). Duquesne University School of Law reserves the right to revoke one's acceptance based on the nature of the event.

Applicants should retain copies of all items submitted as part of the admission application. These materials become the property of Duquesne University and will be neither reproduced nor returned to the applicant. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the file for Admissions Committee consideration is complete and that all required documents have been received by the Admissions Office.

Deadlines

Applications for all divisions are accepted after September 1 for the following academic year. Note that decisions are made on a rolling basis, therefore it is in your best interest to apply well before the published deadline. Decisions can take 6-8 weeks from the time an application becomes complete. Applicants are responsible for submitting all required items and can check the status of their application online via the Application Status Check.

  • JD applications should be received by March 1 for priority consideration.
  • Binding Early Decision Program applications must be received no later than December 15.
