Duquesne University School of Law

Meet Brook Dirlam

Third-Year Day Student

Hometown

Honesdale, Pa.

What is your practice-area interest?

Labor and Employment Law

Why did you choose Duquesne Law?

Coming from Penn State, I experienced alumni pride first hand. Duquesne alumni also have that same type of pride. I knew that Duquesne’s prime location in Pittsburgh and strong alumni network would help me succeed.

Are you involved with law student organizations and/or publications?

Yes, I'm a member of the Appellate Moot Court Board and served as competition coach at the Touro Law and Religion Moot Court Competition. I have also served as the Business Law Journal research editor, Vol. 18.

How did you become involved in moot court? Would you recommend it to other students?

My interest in the Appellate Moot Court Board was sparked during my Legal Research and Writing class my first year. Although the process was agonizing at times, my final work product in my LRW class was something of which I was extremely proud.  Students who have that feeling will surely excel in moot court. It has been a very rewarding experience for me.

Congratulations on receiving the Fritz scholarship. What led you to apply and how it has affected your studies?

As an undergrad I was trying to decide whether I should stay at Penn State for law school or to branch out. I spoke over the phone with Dean Gormley a couple of times and met Professor Moriarty for coffee during a visit to Pittsburgh. Later, Dean Gormley called and told me I was being awarded the Fritz scholarship.

The scholarship award has really opened up doors for me. Everyone entering school is worried about how they are going to pay for school. This takes a little pressure off and allows me to dedicate more time to my schoolwork and pursuing internships without constantly worrying about finances.

What advice would you give to students considering law school?

Treat it like a job and you will be successful. If you put in the work you will succeed.

When you’re not reading law books, what do you like to do for fun?

Not being from the area, I love exploring Pittsburgh, which always seems to have something different going on every week. But, I also have a group of high school friends that are spread out across the country, so I enjoy traveling to meet them and seeing the exciting things that they are doing in their lives.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I have really fallen in love with the city of Pittsburgh, so I can definitely see myself here for a while.

What might people be surprised to know about you?

I was in a movie with Ryan Gosling!
