Alumni and faculty admitted to bar of the U.S. Supreme Court

Wednesday, March 9, 2016

Thirty-three alumni and faculty from Duquesne University School of Law were admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States on Monday, March 7, 2016. Family members joined the admitted attorneys for an early morning reception in the Rehnquist Dining Room and the special ceremony in the courtroom following the court’s business of the day.

At the appointed time, Associate Dean Wes Oliver made a motion for admission of individuals in Duquesne University School of Law’s group, calling each by name. Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. granted the motion and administered the oath. The chief justice then welcomed and congratulated the bar’s newest members.

Among the admitted attorneys was Law Alumni Relations Director Jeanine DeBor, who arranged the trip, Professor Laurie Serafino, Professor Tracey McCants-Lewis, Professor Kate Norton, Judge Alexander Bicket from the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Duquesne Law Alumni Association President Jessica Jurasko, and others.

Following the ceremony the group returned to the Rehnquist Dining Room and had the pleasure of talking informally with Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Associate Justice Clarence Thomas. Both graciously welcomed the Pittsburgh contingent and posed for photos.

To qualify for admission to the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States, an applicant must have been admitted to practice in the highest court of a state, commonwealth, territory or possession, or the District of Columbia for a period of at least three years immediately before the date of application; must not have been the subject of any adverse disciplinary action pronounced or in effect during that three-year period; and must appear to the Court to be of good moral and professional character.

Duquesne hosted a special reception for law alumni living in the Washington, D.C. area the evening before the Supreme Court admissions ceremony.
