Prof. Rago comments on D.A.'s plan for sign off on felony charges

Thursday, February 9, 2017

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette interviewed Professor John Rago for an article about the Allegheny County District Attorney’s new plan to have assistant district attorneys sign off on felony arrests before charges are filed.

Rago, who teaches in Duquesne Law's criminal justice program, said that the system must be fair and balanced, always with a goal of public safety, and that policies in place “should be good for law enforcement, victims and the accused alike.

“Everyone wants the same result — arrest the right person on charges that are appropriate and provable. [The new plan] gives the police and DA’s office a chance to make better decisions earlier in the process.”
